This is a collection of heartfelt letters from patients who have experienced chemotherapy, offering comfort, advice, and song recommendations to accompany you as you begin your treatment. Each letter is a reminder that you are not alone, and a playlist of the songs mentioned can be found at our YouTube Letter Writing Project playlist.
This project began during the pandemic to provide solace to those facing chemotherapy without visitors, and it continues today to bring comfort regardless of visitor restrictions.

SONG: “Living in the Moment” by Jason Mraz
Dear Friend,
I was in your shoes two years ago, and I know how daunting this can be. Trust that your chemo nurse will be a source of comfort and joy. Bring items that bring you peace—a favorite blanket, cozy socks, or snacks. You are stronger than you think, and taking things one moment at a time will help. My "theme song" was Living in the Moment by Jason Mraz, and I hope it brings you peace as well.
With warm thoughts,
Fellow Friend
SONG: “Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin
Dear Friend,
A year ago, I walked into the infusion room for the first time. Though I had my loved ones beside me, I know the isolation COVID brings makes this harder for you. Even without someone physically present, your friends and family are with you in spirit. I hope Rain Song by Led Zeppelin brings you the same comfort it gave me—the music is beautiful, and the lyrics speak to endurance.
With love and strength,
A Fellow Survivor

SONG: “Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield
Dear Friend,
We don’t know each other, but I know this: We are strong. Remember the love of your family and friends, and know they are always with you. On tough days, imagine someone dancing and singing to Pocketful of Sunshine just for you. Know that you are loved and cared for more than you can imagine.
Hugs,
A Fellow Stranger
SONG: “Life” by Matthew Halsall
Dear Friend,
You are not alone. You have the support of your community, even in unexpected places. My wish is that through this process, you become an expert at savoring life’s good moments. When you get a small reprieve, embrace it fully. My song choice is Life by Matthew Halsall, which feels like a peaceful Sunday morning.
Sending warmth,
Friend
SONG: “Liebesfreud” by Fritz Kreisler
Dear Friend,
The first day of chemo is tough, and not having family physically with you adds to the challenge. But trust that the UCLA staff will take great care of you. My advice is to take things one step at a time. During treatment, I found solace in classical music, especially Liebesfreud by Fritz Kreisler. I hope it brings you peace as it did for me.
With love and light,
A Survivor

SONG: Anything Beyoncé
Dear Friend,
Today marks the beginning of your healing journey. Focus on how the treatment is helping your body. Let your loved ones support you—ask for help when you need it. Remember, you are never alone, and the entire community is here for you. You’ve got this!
Sending love,
A Fellow Fighter
SONG: Mozart
Dear Loved One,
I, too, sat in the chair you now occupy, and I am with you in spirit. Chemotherapy will transform you in ways you never expected, revealing the strength within you. Prioritize your needs and keep your spirit strong—this is your journey. You can do this, and I believe in you.
With love,
A Fellow Survivor
